How long do artificial flowers last? Lifespan & tips

A beautiful bouquet that you don’t have to say goodbye to after a week: that’s one of the great advantages of artificial flowers. But how long do artificial flowers actually last? Can you enjoy the same artificial bouquet for years on end? And what can you do yourself to keep artificial flowers looking their best for as long as possible?

The short answer: good-quality artificial flowers can last for years. They don’t wilt and, with normal use, they retain their shape and colour for a long time. Exactly how long artificial flowers stay looking their best depends, amongst other things, on their quality, where you display them and how you look after them. How long do artificial flowers stay looking good?

Unlike fresh flowers, artificial flowers do not have a fixed shelf life. They do not wilt and do not need water or nutrients.

That doesn’t mean every artificial flower automatically stays looking good for the same length of time. The quality of the materials used and the finish play an important role. Modern artificial flowers, for example, are made from materials such as polyester and plastic (did you know that silk hasn’t been used for some time now?). These can be used to replicate fine textures, natural colour variations and realistic flower shapes.

With high-quality artificial flowers, the shape and colours remain beautiful for years under normal use. That’s what makes artificial flowers so appealing for your home décor. You don’t buy a bouquet just for a few weeks; you can enjoy it season after season.

What determines the lifespan of artificial flowers?

How long artificial flowers last depends on various factors. In particular, the quality, sunlight, humidity and how you look after the flowers are important.

1. The quality of the artificial flowers

It all starts with the flower itself. With high-quality artificial flowers, great attention has been paid to the materials, construction and finish. Petals retain their shape, colours are faithfully reproduced, and details such as the centre of the flower, the leaves and the stem are carefully crafted.

2. Direct sunlight

Artificial flowers do not need sunlight. In fact, a spot that is exposed to bright sunlight all day long is not always the best choice.

Modern artificial flowers are generally well suited to normal indoor lighting. However, with prolonged exposure to bright, direct sunlight, colours may fade slightly over time.

Of course, that doesn’t mean you have to keep artificial flowers away from every window. A light-filled living room is no problem. Do you have a windowsill or a spot that gets hours of direct sunlight? In that case, it’s better to find another spot if you want to keep the colours looking their best for as long as possible.

Do artificial flowers fade in the sun? Yes, artificial flowers can fade over time if they are exposed to bright, direct sunlight for long periods.

How quickly this happens varies depending on the material, colour and type of flower. Normal indoor daylight is quite different from a bouquet that is left in full sun for hours every day.

Do you want to prevent discolouration as much as possible? Then it’s best not to leave your artificial flowers in the sunniest spot in the house for long periods. An added bonus: it gives you a good excuse to rearrange your interior every now and then.

3. Water and moisture

Artificial flowers do not, of course, need water. Nevertheless, they are sometimes placed in a vase of water, for example to make the arrangement look even more like a fresh bouquet, or because artificial flowers are combined with fresh flowers.

A little moisture isn’t necessarily a problem, but we advise against prolonged contact with water. Many artificial flower stems contain iron wire to make the stem sturdy yet flexible. Prolonged contact with water can cause this to oxidise. Any coating around the stem can also be damaged by water.

4. Dust and dirt

Artificial flowers require little care, but they are not entirely maintenance-free. Just like a cupboard, vase or other home accessory, artificial flowers also collect dust over time. This can become particularly noticeable on large leaves and petals.  This won’t suddenly ruin the flowers, but it can make them look less fresh and realistic. It is therefore a good idea to clean them every now and then.

How do you clean artificial flowers?

Fortunately, cleaning artificial flowers is simple. For loose dust, you can use a soft feather duster or cloth. A hairdryer on a cool, low setting can also be useful for gently blowing dust away from between small petals and leaves.

Is there any dirt on a leaf or stem? If so, you can gently wipe it off with a slightly damp, soft cloth. It’s best to avoid using harsh cleaning products, as these can damage the colour or the material. Do this every now and then and you’ll notice that the colours look much fresher again.

When should you replace artificial flowers?

That’s perhaps the best bit: there isn’t necessarily a specific point at which an artificial bouquet ‘wears out’. Perhaps after a few years you’ve grown tired of a particular colour. Your interior décor changes. Or you simply fancy something new.

In that case, you don’t even need to replace the whole bouquet. Just a few new artificial flowers can be enough to give an existing arrangement a completely different look. Remove a large flower, add a different colour or a few long stems, and the bouquet will feel completely different. A new vase can also make a surprisingly big difference.

Are artificial flowers worth it if they last for years?

A bouquet of artificial flowers often costs more to buy than a single bouquet of fresh flowers. On the other hand, you don’t have to replace them after just one or two weeks.

You can use good-quality artificial flowers for years, rearranging them and adapting them to your interior or the season. That’s why we prefer not to look solely at what an artificial bouquet costs at the time of purchase, but above all at how long you can enjoy it.

If you opt for individual artificial flowers or bunches, that effect is even greater. Flowers that are arranged together in a single vase this spring can be used again later in a completely different arrangement.

With high-quality artificial flowers, a good spot in your home and a little care now and then, you can enjoy the same flowers for years to come. And perhaps that is the greatest advantage: not only do they remain beautiful, but you can also reuse them time and time again.

Today as a colourful bouquet on the dining table, next season in a different arrangement, and later perhaps as a few individual flowers in a pretty vase. This way, artificial flowers continue to evolve with your interior, without ever having to wilt.
